Madewood Plantation House, Napoleonville,Louisiana A national historic landmark on Bayou Lafourche. Designed by Irish American architect Henry Howard, the 21 room mansion was built in 1846 by Col. Thomas Pugh,a suger cane planter.Its name is derived from the fact that it is constructed from wood from tree's on the property.One of the largest plantation houses in Louisiana,Madewood was bought and renovated in 1964 by Naomi and Harold Marshall.Their son,Keith Marshall,the present owner,collected many of the pieces of furniture when he studied as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University in England. | |||||||||||||||||||||||

While Madewood has been a movie star-most notably in "A Women Called Moses," featuring Cicely Tyson, and "Sister,Sister" with Eric Stoltz, Jennifer Jason-Leigh and Judith Ivey, its primary focus in recent years has been to welcome daily visitors and overnight guests. Those who stay in Madewood's gracious rooms with canopied beds and antiques gather at 6 each evening for wine and cheese in the library, followed by a 7 p.m. dinner by candlelight around the huge oak dining room table. Typical Southern Specialities include gumbo, shrimp pie, Madewoods Pumpkin Lafourche and cornbread. Coffee and Brandy are served afterwards in the parlor and a full breakfast in the dining room the next morning.
